Voters' Guide

Our (USA) national and local elections are just around the corner.  Whomever we elect will have an effect upon all our lives. It is important that we vote and vote with wisdom. "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him" (James 1:5).
Solomon said, "Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to a people."
*** The character of a leader is more important than his charisma, his knowledge, or his experience!

Therefore, here are some guidelines for choosing a leader:

1. He should be humble rather than prideful.

"Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall" (Proverbs 16:18).  "By humility and the fear of the LORD are riches, and honour, and life" (Poverbs 22:4).
2. He should be assertive rather than arrogant and aggressive.
"The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate" (Proverbs 8:13).
3. He should be honest rather than dishonest.
"For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty" (I Timothy 2:2).
4. He should be fair rather than robbing the rich to pay the poor.
"The king's strength also loveth judgment; thou dost establish equity, thou executest judgment and righteousness in Jacob" (Psalms 99:4).  "Divers weights, and divers measures, both of them are alike abomination to the LORD" (Proverbs 20:10).
5. He should stand to protect the lives of the unborn rather than disregarding them.
"Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture" (Psalm 100:3). "Cursed be he that taketh reward to slay an innocent person. And all the people shall say, Amen" (Deuteronomy 27:25).   See: The Abortion Issue /Q & A
6. He should uphold laws rather than bending them.
"There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death" (Proverbs 14:12). "The king by judgment establisheth the land: but he that receiveth gifts overthroweth it" (Proverbs 29:4).
7. He should promote unity rather than division.
"Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!
It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron's beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments; As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the LORD commanded the blessing, even life for evermore" (Psalms 133:1-3)
8. He should seek wise counsel rather than walking in the counsel of the ungodly.
"Every purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice make war" (Proverbs 20:18).   "Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful" (Psalms 1:1).
9. He should understand that promotion comes from God rather than self exaltation.
"For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south.
But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another" (Psalms 75:6-7).
10. He should understand that godly wisdom is more important than education.
"Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding" (Proverbs 4:7).  "For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness" (I Corinthians 3:19)
11. He should seek the approval of God rather than that of men.
"These things also belong to the wise. It is not good to have respect of persons in judgment" (Proverbs 24:23). "The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe" (Proverbs 29:25).
12. He should trust God more than trusting his own intellect.
"Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding" (Proverbs 3:5).
13. He should have the attitude of a servant, rather than a king.
"And they spake unto him, saying, If thou wilt be a servant unto this people this day, and wilt serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be thy servants for ever" (I Kings 12:7).   (The wise counsel of the old men).

"And Samuel told all the words of the LORD unto the people that asked of him a king. And he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: He will take your sons, and appoint them for himself, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and some shall run before his chariots.  And he will appoint him captains over thousands, and captains over fifties; and will set them to ear his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and instruments of his chariots.  And he will take your daughters to be confectionaries, and to be cooks, and to be bakers. And he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of them, and give them to his servants.  And he will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants.  And he will take your menservants, and your maidservants, and your goodliest young men, and your asses, and put them to his work.  He will take the tenth of your sheep: and ye shall be his servants.  And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the LORD will not hear you in that day" (I Samuel 8:10-18). 14. He should stand for godliness, rather than special privileges for homosexuals.
"For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty" (I Timothy 2:2).   "It is not good to accept the person of the wicked, to overthrow the righteous in judgment" (Proverbs 18:5).  See: The Way Out
15. He should understand that defending the country or city may be more important that the economy.
"But if the watchman see the sword come, and blow not the trumpet, and the people be not warned; if the sword come, and take any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at the watchman's hand" (Ezekiel 33:6).
