Steps to

Financial Freedom

$ $ $ $ $ $

This is an outline for finding financial freedom and prosperity.  Please understand that the outline covers many of the Biblical principles concerning finance, but is not totally comprehensive.

I. Recognize that everything belongs to God by right of creation.

A. "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth" (Genesis 1:1).

B. "The earth is the LORD'S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein" (Psalm 24:1).

C.  "The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the LORD of hosts" (Haggai 2:8).

 D. "For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills" (Psalm 50:10).

II. Understand that God is to be our source of wealth.
A. "But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:19).

B. "And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work" (II Corinthians 9:8).

C. "And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full" (Matthew 14:20).

D. "Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think according to the power that worketh in us" (Ephesians 3:20).

E. "Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.  It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep" (Psalm 127:1-2).

III. Believe that God desires to prosper you.
A.  "Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth" (III John 1:2).

B. "Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?    Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?    Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?    And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:    And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.    Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?    Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?    (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things"  (Matthew 6:25-32).

C. "The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want"  (Psalms 23:1).

D. "But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day" (Deuteronomy 8:18).

IV. Understand that God has already made the provision for you.
 A. "According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue"  (II Peter 1:3).

 B. "A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children's children: and the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just" (Proverbs 13:22).

V. Be faithful in tithing and giving.
A. The tithe belongs to God.   "And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the tree, is the LORD'S: it is holy unto the LORD" (Leviticus 27:30).

B. To refuse to tithe is to rob God.  "Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings" (Malachi 3:8).

C. The tithe should go to a local church.   "Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it" (Malachi 3:10).

D. The tithe is on the gross income.  "Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase:  So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine" (Proverbs 3:9-10).   "The first of the firstfruits of thy land thou shalt bring into the house of the LORD thy God" (Exodus 23:19a)..

E. Jesus taught tithing is a New Testament principle.  "Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone" (Matthew 23:23).

F. God is our first debtor (pay tithe first).   "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you" (Matthew 6:33).

G. God challenges us to put Him to the test.   "Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it" (Malachi 3:10).

H. God promises to rebuke the devourer for us.  "And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the LORD of hosts" (Malachi 3:11).

I. GOD'S WAY is: (free will offering directed by God)

1. "Take ye from among you an offering unto the LORD: whosoever is of a willing heart, let him bring it, an offering of the LORD; gold, and silver and brass, . . ." (Exodus 35:5).

2. "And they came, every one whose heart stirred him up, and every one whom his spirit make willing, and they brought the LORD's offering to the work of the tabernacle of the congregation, and for all his service, and . . ." (Exodus 35:21)

3. "And they spake unto Moses, saying, The people bring much more than enough for the service of the work, which the LORD commanded to make" (Exodus 36:5) & (see 35:21-36:7).

4. "For the stuff they had was sufficient for all the work to make it, and too much" (Exodus 36:7).

5. "I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive" (Acts 20:35).

VI. Practice sowing in faith.
A. "Cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it after many days" (Ecclesiastes 11:1).

B. "In the morning sow thy seed, and in the evening withhold not thine hand: for thou knowest not whether shall prosper, either this or that, or whether they both shall be alike good" (Ecclesiastes 11:6).

C. "Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again" (Luke 6:38).

D. "But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully.    Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.    And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:    (As it is written, He hath dispersed abroad; he hath given to the poor: his righteousness remaineth for ever.    Now he that ministereth seed to the sower both minister bread for your food, and multiply your seed sown, and increase the fruits of your righteousness;)    Being enriched in every thing to all bountifulness, which causeth through us thanksgiving to God.     For the administration of this service not only supplieth the want of the saints, but is abundant also by many thanksgivings unto God;    Whiles by the experiment of this ministration they glorify God for your professed subjection unto the gospel of Christ, and for your liberal distribution unto them, and unto all men;    And by their prayer for you, which long after you for the exceeding grace of God in you"  (II Corinthians 9:6-14).

E. "Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap" (Galatians 6:7).

VII. Check your motives concerning giving.
A.  Don't give just because someone asks you to give. "Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver" (II Corinthians 9:7).

B. Don't give just because there is a need.  "of necessity"

C. Give cheerfully.

D. Give in faith believing that God will produce the harvest.  "Now he that ministereth seed to the sower both minister bread for your food, and multiply your seed sown, and increase the fruits of your righteousness" (II Corinthians 9:10).

E. Give generously.   "There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty.   The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself" (Proverbs 11:24-25).

VIII. Learn to wisely USE what God has already given to you.
A. "And the LORD said unto him, What is that in thine hand? And he said, A rod" (Exodus 4:2).  What do you have in your hand?

B. Elijah asked the widow to use her last meal and oil to fix him a cake.  (I Kings 17:10-16).

C. Jesus used the five loaves and two fish.   "He saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? go and see. And when they knew, they say, Five, and two fishes.    And he commanded them to make all sit down by companies upon the green grass.    And they sat down in ranks, by hundreds, and by fifties.    And when he had taken the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and brake the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before them; and the two fishes divided he among them all"  (Mark 6:38-41).

D. In the parable of the talents we find the principle of "use it or lose it".  Matthew 25:14-30.

1. Men of faith use what God has given them, expecting God to produce the increase.

2. Fearful men hide what God has given them, because they look at their own ability to produce an increase.

3. God gives even more to the faithful men and takes away that which has given to the unfaithful.

IX. Check your financial practices.
A. Don't buy on credit.
1.  It violates God's direct command in His Word.   "Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law" (Romans 13:8).

2. To "owe" brings one under legal bondage. "The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender" (Proverbs 22:7).

3. To "owe" brings one under mental bondage.  From the moment we sign till be pay, the burden rests in our minds.  "Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof" (Matthew 6:34).

4. To "owe" is to presume on the future that we will have the money available.    "Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain:    Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away" (James 4:13-14).

5. To "owe" causes us to limit God.  We are tempting to do things our way rather than God's way.    "But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus"  (Philippians 4:19).

6. To say, "I have credit cards in case of an emergency" is to put faith in "credit cards" rather than God.  It is an act of fear.   " For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me. {the thing...: Heb. I feared a fear, and it came upon me}    I was not in safety, neither had I rest, neither was I quiet; yet trouble came"  (Job 3:25-26).   David in contrast said,   "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me"  (Psalms 23:4).

7. To "owe" messes up your financial standing.  The money is no longer yours or God's, it is your creditors.  "The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the LORD of hosts"  (Haggai 2:8).

8. "Credit cards are designed for impulsive shopping.   "For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would" (Galatians 5:17).

9. Using "credit" often makes it extremely difficult to keep up with the amount that you owe, thus making it easy to owe more than you can pay by the due date.    "No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier" (II Timothy 2:4).

10.  "Credit Cards" and "credit purchases" also entail a credit system which brings additional costs to the retailer or seller who must pass that cost along to you in that form of a price increase in MDSE that you buy if or not you pay cash for it or charge it.  Therefore you have less to use in the kingdom.

11. In such cases where the head of the house dies and has credit bills outstanding, there may be needless burden placed upon the family to pay the debts.  This would be defraud by circumstances.   " Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother" (Mark 10:19).

12. Indebtedness is a curse of God's judgment. "He (a stranger) shall lend to thee, and thou shalt not lend to him: he shall be the head, and thou shalt be the tail.  Moreover all these curses shall come upon thee, and shall purse thee, and overtake thee, till thou be destroyed ...." (Deuteronomy 28:44-45).

B. Don't go into partnership.    "No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier"  (II Timothy 2:4).
1. In a partnership there is no "head".

2. If God disciplines one, the other will also suffer the consequences.

C. Don't co-sign loans.
1. "My son, if thou be surety for thy friend, if thou hast stricken thy hand with a stranger,    Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth.    Do this now, my son, and deliver thyself, when thou art come into the hand of thy friend; go, humble thyself, and make sure thy friend.  Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids.    Deliver thyself as a roe from the hand of the hunter, and as a bird from the hand of the fowler"  (Proverbs 6:1-5).

2. "A man void of understanding striketh hands, and becometh surety in the presence of his friend"  (Proverbs 17:18).

3. "Be not thou one of them that strike hands, or of them that are sureties for debts"  (Proverbs 22:26).

4. "Take his garment that is surety for a stranger, and take a pledge of him for a strange woman"  (Proverbs 27:13).

  D. Avoid get-rich-quick schemes.
1. "He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding: but he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly"  (Proverbs 14:29).

2. "The thoughts of the diligent tend only to plenteousness; but of every one that is hasty only to want" (Proverbs 21:5).

3. "A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself; but the simple pass on, and are punished"  (Proverbs 27:12).

4. "He that tilleth his land shall have plenty of bread: but he that followeth after vain persons shall have poverty enough"  (Proverbs 28:19).

5. "He that hasteth to be rich hath an evil eye, and considereth not that poverty shall come upon him" (Proverbs 28:22).

E. Seek wise counsel in finances.
1. "The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise"  (Proverbs 12:15).

2. "Poverty and shame shall be to him that refuseth instruction: but he that regardeth reproof shall be honoured"  (Proverbs 13:18).

3. "Without counsel purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counsellors they are established"  (Proverbs 15:22).

X. Check your attitudes toward money.
A.  Don't be selfish.   "There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty.    The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself" (Proverbs 11:24-25).

B. Don't be dishonest.  "Divers weights are an abomination unto the LORD; and a false balance is not good"  (Proverbs 20:23).  "He that by usury and unjust gain increaseth his substance, he shall gather it for him that will pity the poor"  (Proverbs 28:8).

C.  Don't be greedy.  "He that is greedy of gain troubleth his own house; but he that hateth gifts shall live"  (Proverbs 15:27).

D. Don't love money.   "For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows"  (I Timothy 6:10).

XI.  Check your attitudes toward work.
A.  Don't be lazy.    "He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich" (Proverbs 10:4).   "The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat"  (Proverbs 13:4).   "The hand of the diligent shall bear rule: but the slothful shall be under tribute" (Proverbs 12:24).   "He also that is slothful in his work is brother to him that is a great waster" (Proverbs 18:9).  "The desire of the slothful killeth him; for his hands refuse to labour" (Proverbs 21:25).

B. One who is not willing to work should not eat.    "For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat" (II Thessalonians 3:10).

C.  Don't labor to get rich.  "Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom" (Proverbs 23:4).

D. Be diligent.   "Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men"  (Proverbs 22:29).

E. Don't be a drunkard.  "For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags" (Proverbs 23:21).

XII.  Use fasting and prayer as means of reaching financial freedom.
A. Basic Scripture:   "Is it such a fast that I have chosen? a day for a man to afflict his soul? is it to bow down his head as a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? wilt thou call this a fast, and an acceptable day to the LORD?    Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?  Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?     Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall be thy rereward.   Then shalt thou call, and the LORD shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am. If thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity;    And if thou draw out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noonday:    And the LORD shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.   And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in.    If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words:    Then shalt thou delight thyself in the LORD; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it"  (Isaiah 58:5-14).

B.  Learn to be content.   "Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content" (Philippians 4:11).   "And having food and raiment let us be therewith content" (I Timothy 6:8).

C. Give to the poor.

1.  "He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD; and that which he hath given will he pay him again" (Proverbs 19:17).

2.  "Whoso stoppeth his ears at the cry of the poor, he also shall cry himself, but shall not be heard" (Proverbs 21:13).

3. "He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed; for he giveth of his bread to the poor" (Proverbs 22:9).

4. "He that oppresseth the poor to increase his riches, and he that giveth to the rich, shall surely come to want" (Proverbs 22:16).

5. "He that giveth unto the poor shall not lack: but he that hideth his eyes shall have many a curse" (Proverbs 28:27).

6.  "Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me" (Matthew 19:21).

D. Ask God in faith to bless you financially.
1. "For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith" (Mark 11:23).

2. "But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him" (Hebrew 11:6).

E. Claim the promises of God found in the Word.
1. "A man's belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; and with the increase of his lips shall he be filled" (Proverbs 18:20).

2. "He {Abraham} staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God" (Romans 4:20).

3. "For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us" (II Corinthians 1:20).

4. "Then said he unto them, Therefore every scribe which is instructed unto the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old" (Matthew 13:52).

NOTE:  If you have completed all the above twelve steps and still find that you are not prospering, it may be that God is trying your faith. "And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the LORD an offering in righteousness" (Malachi 3:3).   "That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ" (I Peter 1:7).    "Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you" (I Peter 4:12).  "I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see" (Revelation 3:18).   "My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; {temptation: or, trials}    Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.    But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing" (James 1:2-4).
