Free Association Prayer

Have you ever been to or invited to a prayer service that was supposed to last for a solid hour? You may have feared what to do and found an excuse not to attend the meeting. If you chose to go, you may have been given a list of prayer needs that you might pray for, for ten minutes are so, but what do you do for the rest of the time? You might feel too embarrassed to leave early, so you stay and look spiritual or at least wait to someone else leaves before you do.

    I would like to suggest a creative way to pray for and extended period of time. I call it "free association prayer". I must start by saying the you should always ask the Holy Spirit what to pray and be open to the Spirit's leading. Having said that, I would like to give you a creative way to allow the Holy Spirit to guide you in prayer. You may use the alphabet in free association as a prompt of names and needs for which to pray. I have listed below how it may work. Again, allow the Holy Spirit to be your guide. "Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need" (Hebrews 4:16).

A Pray about that appointment which is coming up.   Pray for Abby who needs emotional healing.

B Pray for Bob that needs a new job. Pray about how to fix that broke washing machine.

C Pray for the your church and your city.   Pray that Carol gets the counseling that she needs.

D Pray for deliverance from an addiction. Pray for divine intervention in the life of David.

E Pray for Ellie who needs help with her daughter. Pray for God's effectual working in your life.

F Pray that the Lord will increase your faith. Pray for your father. Pray for forgiveness.

G Pray to receive more of God's grace to do His work. Pray for spiritual growth in your life and the church.

H Pray for healing and health. Pray for people to help you in God's work.

I Pray that oil industry lowers the prices of gasoline. Pray that OPEC releases more oil for sale.

J Pray for the Supreme Court judges. Pray for Jim's boys who need proper discipline.

K Pray that God works kindness in the life of your spouse. Pray that God's Kingdom comes on earth.

L Pray that Joe and Jane come to love each others. Pray that Pete make Jesus his Lord.

M Pray for your mother's health. Pray for Mary to find a good husband. Pray for God's mercy.

N Pray that new people come to church. Pray that nobody loses their position at work. Pray for our nation.

O Pray for operation that Sally is to have next week. Pray that Harry gets out of the hospital soon.

P Pray for patience. Pray for Paul who is experiencing a divorce. Pray for the President of our nation.

Q Pray that God gives you a quite time to pray and study. Pray that God quickly turns you daughter around.

R Pray for physical rain or that the rain stops. Pray that you come to understand the righteousness of God.

S Pray that God strengthens the faith of your close friend. Pray that the storm does not come your way.

T Pray for your teachers. Pray that your family comes to trust the Lord. Pray that Tom has a good trip.

U Pray for understanding of God's Word. Pray that your spouse quits undermining your decisions.

V Pray for victory over a sin habit. Pray that domestic violence decreases in you city.

W Pray for wisdom at work. Pray that God raises up powerful witnesses to the faith.

X The X may simply remind us to be thankful for the cross of Jesus.

Y Pray that this year is a prosperous one for you and your family. Pray that the yard sell goes well.

Z Pray for Zion (the city of Jerusalem). Pray for good zoning laws.

* Remember that is set up to leave our minds open to the prompting of the Holy Spirit.
