It is interesting that in the KJV of the Old Testament there are two times that the Hebrew word for a "male goat" is translated "devils". "And they shall no more offer their sacrifices unto devils, after whom they have gone a whoring. This shall be a statute for ever unto them throughout their generations" (Leviticus 17:7). "And he ordained him priests for the high places, and for the devils, and for the calves which he had made" (II Chronicles 11:15). It is also interesting that those who observe occult practices often use the head of the male goat for a symbol of Satan. Even today, the goat is used to deceive sheep in leading them to the slaughter.
The devil is the accuser of Believers. "And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night" (Revelation 12:10). We understand that the accusations are FALSE!
The devil is also the adversary of Believers.
"And he shewed me Joshua the high priest standing
before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right hand to
resist him" (Zechariah 3:1).
"Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour" (I Peter 5:8). The roaring lion is "roaring" out lies!
The apostle, John, calls him the deceiver.
"For many deceivers are entered into the world, who
confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver
and an antichrist" (II John 1:7).
He tries to allure us into sin with deception. "And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea" (Revelation 20:7-8). Deception always has a lie built into it.
In Genesis, the devil started by questioning the Word of God. "Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?" (Genesis 3:1). Then he moved to an outright lie. "And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die" (Genesis 3:4). Next, he brings accusation against the integrity of God implying that God was keeping something good from them. "For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil" (Genesis 3:5). That is also the way he works today!
Jesus explains that the devil is the father of all lies. "Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it" (John 8:44).
When we see the devil, he is a liar and his armor is lies. "And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie" (II Thessalonians 2:8-11).
Paul also wrote that we are to stand against the the "wiles" of the devil. "Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil" (Ephesians 6:11). What are the "wiles" of the devil? These are lies! We must stand in the truth of who God is and who we are in Christ.
We are also to be careful for the "devices" of the devil. "Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices" (II Corinthians 2:11). What are the "devices" of the devil? The context of the passage suggests that the problem is unforgiveness. However, unforgiveness is based upon a lie that we must get even to be at peace.
We are to quench all the fiery darts of the enemy. "Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked" (Ephesians 6:16). What are the "fiery darts" of the devil? These are false accusations about us, God, and His Word. They are lies! Faith, based upon the truth of the Word puts out all the fiery darts of the devil.
Paul furthermore said that we are to cast down the "strongholds" of the enemy. "(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)" (II Corinthians 10:4). What are the "strongholds" of the enemy? A stronghold is a fortress of lies built up around the presence of the enemy in one's life. For example, "I have the right to be angry (a lie) after all they did to me." The truth is, "Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:" (Ephesians 4:31). We must always confront the lies with the Word of God. "And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free" (John 8:32).
Jesus said that the church is come against the "gates" of hell. "And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it" (Matthew 16:18). What are the "gates" of hell? The gates may be packaged in many different forms: doubt, fear, idolatry, hatred, deception, and lust. However, they all have the word "LIE" written on each of them. "In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will." (II Timothy 2:25-26). "But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ" (Ephesians 4:15).
